Staff Initiate Collection Campaigns for Environmentally Sound Recycling of Batteries
Oiltanking Battery Collection Campaigns
In Oman, batteries are not usually collected separately, but are disposed of as household waste. As a result, they end up in landfills, where the heavy metals they contain such as mercury, in combination with the high ambient temperatures, pose a serious threat to people and the environment. In 2015 the Oiltanking Odfjell Oman HSSE team initiated a battery collection campaign at Sohar schools as part of the environmental campaign „Battery Collection Sohar“, which runs since 2012. 49 kilogram of batteries were collected, which were then recycled in an environmentally responsible way. In cooperation with the Sohar University workshops on the subject of waste paper collection and recycling plastic were organized at 27 schools in Sohar, Liwa, Saham and Muladha and were attended by over 200 students.
