Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo Helps to Raise Awareness for the Global Problem of Human Trafficking

Demonstrating Against Modern Slavery

What’s the third most lucrative illegal commodity after drugs and weapons? Human beings. Human trafficking is a sad global reality that affects every continent and economic structure, and South Africa is no exception. The shackles of the slave trade may be long gone, but tens of thousands of people in South Africa are still being subjected to modern day slavery right under our noses. Oiltanking Calulo partnered with the Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre (UCEC) to help build awareness for the crime and the current situation. UCEC and Springbok Rugby legend André Joubert organized the 3rd annual “Stop Human Trafficking 5K Awareness Walk” for families on October 8, 2016. The five-kilometer walk also served to raise funds for the operation and upkeep of Shilou House, the UMGENI community crisis center. The whole Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo team as well as family members took part, making it a fun-filled family day. UCEC and Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo’s goal in organizing the walk was to generate conversations that lead to improvements in global aftercare efforts and the prosecution of traffickers worldwide.
