A dedicated and motivated workforce is one of the pillars that contribute to a company’s success and its reputation.

As long ago as 1943, the behavioral psychologist Abraham Maslow suggested in “A Theory of Human Motivation” that belongingness is a major source of motivation. Other theories also posit the need to belong as a fundamental psychological motivation.

The need to belong is quite evident in the workplace. Employees want to fit in, they seek approval and acceptance from their colleagues and leaders. Only when they find fulfillment in this quest will they feel connected to their work and workplace, and as a result be happy to stay with the company. Nurturing a sense of engagement and belongingness e.g. by letting our employees know that what they do matters, recognizing their accomplishments and encouraging camaraderie is therefore an important commitment we make to each other across the organization.
